About Area Converter

Area is one of those measurements where units cluster around two completely different scales. Indoors and in construction, square metres and square feet describe rooms, floor plans, and floorings. Outdoors and in agriculture, hectares and acres describe land, with a hectare being one square hectometre (10,000 m²) and an acre roughly 4,047 m².

This converter handles both scales in one place so you can move between a floor plan in square feet, the rentable area in square metres, and the size of a back garden in acres without juggling separate calculators.

How to use

Enter a number into the input at the top and pick its unit — square metres, square kilometres, square centimetres, square feet, square inches, square yards, square miles, acres, or hectares. The conversions panel shows the equivalent value in every other unit.

Each row has a copy button, and tapping a row switches the input to that unit while keeping the displayed numeric value. The URL updates with each change so you can share or bookmark a specific conversion.

Frequently asked questions

  • How many square feet is one square metre?

One square metre is about 10.764 square feet — roughly 11 if you're estimating. Conversely, one square foot is 0.0929 m². So a 100 m² apartment is about 1,076 ft²; a 1,500 ft² house is about 139 m².

  • How big is one hectare?

A hectare is 10,000 m² — equivalent to a square 100 m on a side. That's about 2.471 acres, or roughly the size of an international rugby pitch. Hectares are the standard agricultural and land-area unit almost everywhere except the United States.

  • How big is one acre?

An acre is 43,560 square feet, 4,047 m², or about 0.405 hectares. Historically defined as the area a yoke of oxen could plough in a day, it's the standard unit for US and UK property and farmland. A square 209 ft on each side is roughly one acre.

  • How many square metres in a square kilometre?

One square kilometre is 1,000,000 m² — because it's a square that's 1,000 m on each side, and area scales with the square of length. The same gotcha applies in every unit: a square kilometre is a million square metres, not a thousand.
