About Volume Converter

Volume conversions hide a trap: there are two different "gallons" in common use. A US gallon is 3.785 litres, a UK (Imperial) gallon is 4.546 litres — about 20% larger. The same split runs through pints, quarts, and fluid ounces. Recipes, fuel economy figures, and beer-glass sizes can all be off by a fifth if you grab the wrong gallon, which is a much bigger margin than people expect.

This converter keeps both systems explicit at all times. Enter a value in any unit — litres, millilitres, cubic metres, US or UK gallons, US quarts, US or UK pints, US cups, US or UK fluid ounces, US tablespoons, or US teaspoons — and see the equivalent in every other unit, with US and UK variants clearly labelled.

How to use

Type a value into the input at the top and pick its unit from the dropdown. The conversions panel lists every other supported unit with the equivalent value and a copy button.

For cooking, US recipes use US cups, tablespoons, and teaspoons by convention, while UK recipes typically use metric millilitres and grams alongside Imperial pints. Tap any row in the conversions list to switch the input to that unit — useful for chaining conversions or for double-checking that a recipe in one system gives a sensible result in the other.

Frequently asked questions

  • How big is a US gallon compared to a UK gallon?

A US gallon is 3.785 litres; a UK (Imperial) gallon is 4.546 litres — about 20% larger. The same ratio applies to pints, quarts, and fluid ounces. Always check whether a recipe, a fuel-economy number, or a beverage size is US or UK before converting.

  • How big is a US cup in millilitres?

A US cup is 236.59 mL. The "metric cup" used in some other countries (especially Australia and New Zealand) is 250 mL — close but not identical. The cup row in this converter is the US cup.

  • Are US fluid ounces the same as UK fluid ounces?

No. A US fluid ounce is 29.57 mL; a UK fluid ounce is 28.41 mL — slightly smaller. The two systems disagree on every fluid measurement that shares a name, which is exactly why both variants are shown explicitly in the conversions list.

  • What's a teaspoon in millilitres?

A US teaspoon is 4.929 mL; three teaspoons make a tablespoon (14.79 mL). Cooking instructions often abbreviate them as tsp and tbsp; in metric kitchens, recipes typically just write 5 mL and 15 mL directly.

  • Why is the same dish's flour weight more reliable than its volume?

Because flour compresses unpredictably — a cup scooped from a bag is heavier than a cup sifted in. Recipes that specify weight in grams are more reproducible across kitchens. This converter handles volume only; for weight conversions see the Weight Converter.
